I've had this happen a lot as well. It's especially frustrating when we move somewhere new

or when we first had kids, since we had no idea what the going rate is. And they just steadfastly refuse to give any sort of number for whatever they charge. I'll even say something like "Does $X/hr work?" and they respond "Oh, just whatever you want to pay me".
