The nearest temple is about 2 hours away, and it started out with it being a YW activity. The ward would have a temple trip and so the adults would all go, and the moms and dads would bring their kids and then the YW would babysit in the church building next to the temple.

And then, there were some adults who couldn't make that time with the ward. So some YW somewhere said they'd watch those kids while the mom and dad went to the temple. And it just took off from there. And now it's kind of the norm there - the YW babysit for free if you're making a temple trip.

My mom even mentioned it to me as something that my wife and I could probably take advantage of and I had to explain to her that that isn't normal (here at least).
