While I generally agree with you when it comes to officials (I umpire baseball)
I think there comes a level where umpires/officials do invite criticism and need to welcome it (if warranted). If you are officiating little league baseball, youth football, basketball etc - then OF COURSE, don't criticize unless you are willing to go help re-supply the ranks of officials at that level.

Now, once you get to major college level of any sport, then I think you need to welcome criticism and you are then expected to perform at a higher level. You are getting paid at a higher level to work the game, you are getting assigned to the game due to your skill level/experience level (hopefully) and you can't make bad officiating mistakes anymore; if you do happen to do so (none of us are perfect) be willing to own up to the mistake and do better next time.

Be consistent, and only call what you actually see.

PSA - If anyone in the North Texas area (greater DFW area) wants to get started umpiring baseball/softball/basketball, feel free to reach out to me; our organization has free training coming up again this Winter (Feb usually) and our people do everything from 6u T-ball up to major college.
