1. Defense is too vanilla. Often seems to just be a base 30 or 40 front. He does twist and stunt but even they are kind of basic.
2. Don't have a huge problem with not blitzing a ton, but his blitzes lack creativity. On the last TD T blitzed both LBs right up the A gap, with the linemen going straight in as well. So he's expecting at least one guy to beat his man, but didn't give any of them an advantage. Also, would it be the worst thing to bring a corner once in ax while? You get that guy coming off the edge and he comes with speed and will at least disrupt the rhythm of the play.
3. And this is the biggest one. Tuiaki is too slow to make adjustments on the fly. He actually does a decent job at the half, but there were similar adjustments to be made, specifically on the way the edge was being defended, but it took halftime to fix. This to me is the biggest indictment of his ability. This is FBS and soon to be P5 level football. The opposing teams have good, smart and creative coaches. Tuiaki is not one of them.
We're stuck with him for at least the next two seasons, but he's going to get exposed even more in the Big 12.
BYU should have won that game last night 54-10. They were light years ahead of USU.
