"But, we are emotionally tied to a team's success. " The reply from a loyal fan here who may take's issue with Nick Saban's Take. Also, the title of an upcoming conference talk.
And therein lies the crux of the challenge with fandom in the world today. Bitterness, anger and behavior changes because of the result of a sports event outcome are a sign that a fan is too invested emotionally. Get two opposing fans that are too invested emotionally and the emotion takes over in victory and defeat. Hate, arguing, animosity, etc all because of a sports game that has little to no impact on a fan's life. (the same cannot be said about a player or coaches whose life is directly impacted by winning and losing)
If your long term happiness revolves around winning (or winning by not enough) and losing of games that you're not directly involved with, you are too emotionally invested in a an entertainment event to the detriment of yourself and other people in your life.
Love winning. Hate losing. Over both by the next day.
Grateful for participants that try their hardest. Empathy for those that struggle. For them it is life, for me it is entertainment.
From the Great Anton Ego
"In many ways, the work of a Fan is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we Fans must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average football game is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so."
you're welcome from those that comment about this being a talk from the bishop or EQP.
