They're big and a lot of work. If properly trained and socialized, they can be great, but they're definitely tougher than the more popular breeds like Labs or Goldens.

If you're looking at first time dogs, I'd suggest labs, golden retriever, bichon, papillon (if you want smaller) or (my top choice) a Vizsla - though Vizsla is best for active individuals. Really even within that list it all depends on what you value.
