Lamb's not the problem. And I notice that those who keep ripping him have not
not yet pointed to a single failure they can prove he was responsible for. In fact, the idea that he would be necessarily let go by the hiring of a new DC overlooks the fact that his position as AHC is ABOVE, and thus not subordinate to, that of the DC. He makes more money than the DC, too. Though Sitake assigned him to the safeties, he not only remained AHC, he was never given defensive play-calling or scheme-deciding responsibilities. To blame him for defensive shortcomings is tantamount to blaming Fesi for our failures to convert 4th-and 1 downs with the running game. Blaming him for 12 players running out onto the field once shows an ignorance of what coaches do. The players are all adults and university students, remember. No coach is expected to be responsible for that kind of mistake.

And where's the evidence the safeties have been falling short, specifically? Against Utah Tech, for example, the failures on the two long bombs were clearly identified as cornerback failures, where the corner simply didn't follow his man deep when in man coverage. Is Lamb also responsible for the injury to Malik Moore, our best safety, which kept him out most of the year? Micah Harper has been a star. I also think Alfrey has played well given the fact that he's a freshman starter thrown in there to replace Moore. Have our defensive struggles resulted in opponents completing a lot of throws over the top? Nope.

Regarding Lamb's intelligence, it becomes obvious when he does interviews. He's well-spoken and insightful, and if anyone hasn't picked up on that, that person should remember that every coach he's ever worked with (including Jim Harbaugh, not just Kalani and his staff) consider him very, very bright.

Lamb has also had amazing success as a head coach who took over under very difficult circumstances at SUU. And if he were the problem here, Kalani would have had a lot less difficulty in firing him than in accepting Tuiaki's resignation. But he didn't do that. Maybe the failures in pressuring the passer were the responsibility of the DC, disappointing as that may be to those who want multiple scapegoats.
