It that way at BYU. Probably by Whittingham himself. He purposely chose to recruit developmental players over established talent; and chose a defensive system that is supposed to minimize differences in talent/speed. He stayed committed to that, and honesty it almost worked… it it perhaps could have worked if Tuiaki was better, and the staff was better at developing and with a few less injuries.
But, it didn’t work. And I think he must realize the developmental/conservative defense approach isn’t going to cut it.
