Curtis LeMay’s destructive bombing tactics are spelled out in “The Bomber Mafia”. It is shocking! I recently wrote about the dilemma Japan was in as FDR and later Truman pushed the policy of “unconditional surrender”. The Japanese played the Russian card but did not know of the secret deals at Yalta. Ambassador Sato in Moscow, trying to uphold the Neutrality Pact with the USSR, ended up getting the Soviet Declaration of War and news of the Soviet invasion of Manchuria (Greg Gubler, Gentleman Samurai and Internationalist, Rowman, paperback). The Japanese perspective of this tumultuous period is worth reading!
