I think too many are drawing the wrong lesson from this.
The lesson isn't "never invest with a ward member or someone you know from Church." The lesson is, never make any investment promising a substantially above-market return.
And understand that the return potential ALWAYS comes with added risk. If it is risk-free, then the money should earn close to zero return. If the return is really high, you stand lose all your money-- either because it is a risky play or because it is a fraud.
