And probably one of the 2 or 3 biggest safety threats to police officers out there because people with this belief system are generally taught/trained to confront police like this by their support networks. Not in a violent way per se, but in a confrontational way. One of the news stories I saw on this incident a couple of days ago showed a picture of the license plate on the victim's vehicle, and I knew right away what they were dealing with.
This is not an average traffic stop, and the officers knew it.
These people consider themselves to be above the law in that they believe they are not subject to the jurisdiction of police entities in general and similar authority. I've dealt with a few indirectly in Nevada on a couple of civil matters (tax rights) as an attorney and worked closely with one in Utah (Orem) before I went to law school. On the extreme side, several years ago 2 "sovereign citizens" approached and killed 2 metro police officers in Las Vegas while they were eating lunch pretty much without any warning.
GO COUGS.
