Understood. The police were within their rights once he did that. But, seems
like the police escalated the situation which led to the suspect to reach for a gun.
He didn't reach for his gun until the police forced their way into the car and put their hands on him.
Again, may be it was inevitable. But, may be a more patient approach would have avoided the need to fire. Put a boot on his car and explain the situation. May be the suspect would have come to terms with the situation, reluctantly complying and giving himself up to the police.
