It would require other sports to compete and produce based on the "value" they bring to the whole. What that might do is allow some schools besides the "big boys" to specialize in more "niche" sports and be more competitive as others let it fall by the way side. Anyway, I agree with you that it could hurt in some ways, but might provide different incentives and outcomes that would sort themselves out in productive ways too.
