BYU is far more likely to end up like Minnesota or Syracuse than other programs
that have a national championship history.

If BYU became the perennial best team in the Big12 the narrative would likely be that the Big12 stinks rather than BYU is a legitimate blue blood. Winning the Big12 will not be enough to become an elite program, no matter how many times BYU does it. They are going to consistently win playoff games, which isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Utah learned the hard way these last two years that being the best team in a conference with no elite teams doesn't make you an elite team. The true blue blood programs are on a completely different planet athletically than BYU or Utah will ever be.

If you aren't in the Big10 or SEC you don't have a chance at becoming big time. Unless those two conferences fall apart, or the Pac/Big12/ACC combine to form another elite conference (and BYU and/or Utah made it into that conference by some miracle) neither BYU or Utah will ever be truly elite.
