Not surprising
We just finished a mission in Arkansas/Oklahoma and this type of discussion is pretty normal there. We had lots of discussions with folks in stores, restaurants etc. about faith. People there are just way more open about their faith and what it means to them.
I might add, we did not have one experience where people reacted negatively to us. I am sure the young missionaries got it occasionally but all our discussions were pleasant and usually ended with people thanking us for serving.

And this is a perfect example why the XII is a great fit for BYU. I can’t imagine hearing this from a PAC team.
