Air resistance increases exponentially with speed. My off road LX470 can barely sniff 15mpg @ 80mph yet I’ve seen 20
Following a jeep that wouldn’t go fast over the same stretch of freeway (or freeway frontage roads, we were 55-65mph on i70).

You lose a significant amount of mpg in any car from 55nph to 80mph.

It’s part of why the 80s cars had high fuel economy.gov “original stickers”, because the highway testing was done at the double nickel.
