The game plan last year seemed to be
focused on getting the ball down low to Gustin and having Calvert out at the three point line. Calvert had been an effective three shooter the prior year. That would force teams to extend one of their bigs out on Calvert and give Gustin more room to work down low.
Unfortunately Calvert shot poorly from three (26.7%). That obviously is not going to force the player guarding her to be super worried. So it was the worst of all worlds. No room for Gustin and a 6'4" player on the perimeter who wasn't effective out there.

I watched a decent amount of the women's games last year and thought Calvert was actually fairly effective when she did play down low when Gustin was out. She shot 57.7% from two so she had to have been somewhat effective. I agree with you that there were times when she looked awkward down there.

You are correct in saying that the offensive philosophy that the coaches go with this year will be interesting. They didn't get much help as far as post type players go. But they also didn't get any lights out three point shooters (possibly Gibb?). The three perimeter transfers we brought in combined for 130/398 (32.7%) last season from three. Our returning players went 93/300 (31.0%). That kind of shooting, combined with no interior game, will not get it done. I would think Calvert has to play low this year to give the team some semblance of an inside scoring game.

But, as my kids would tell you, I have been wrong before.
