Yea they do, often with 2-2:30 to go. It used to be a minute or maybe 1:20 if
you had a good chance or an offensive zone faceoff.

The trend of pulling the goalie earlier is analytics driven and according to some of those stats I’ve seen coaches still don’t pull him early enough, 4-5 minutes is more ideal (I don’t have a source on that, I’m going by memory so maybe I’m off a bit).

Another related analytics trend is defenders shooting for the empty net from the other end of the ice. When I was a kid, if a defender missed the empty net and iced the puck it was a huge offense, and that was even before the NHL changed the rule that the team called for icing couldn’t change players. Now nobody bats an eye, it’s just accepted that if you get a chance you shoot for the empty net from anywhere on the ice.
