Your assumption is wrong.
I'm not white. And it was indeed comforting that at BYU, I had a whopping ONE teacher of my ethnicity. Yes, it made a small difference, and he continues to mentor me to this day. I loved all my white teachers, but I connected with this one professor in a different way.
