Thanks to LV Coug, who brought this article up a couple of weeks ago.

"Linebacker Rick Crowell will have to sit out Colorado State's season-opening game against Colorado next month as part of an NCAA decision granting him a medical hardship and another year of eligibility."

The reason behind the decision was that he would have played 5 games against the team, or at least that's what Jon Wilner tweeted was the reason. I don't know if it would apply for Wynn 2013, given that we the Utah/BYU game won't be a season-opener, but it isn't unprecedented and certainly worth considering.

That said - would BYU rather face a new QB on Utah, or Jordan Wynn?
