It doesn't in the article, but
the circumstances and reasons behind the ruling were well known at the time. He received a medical hardship 5th season due to injury early in one of his seasons, but the NCAA determined that he wouldn't be able to play against CU (an OOC, regular season opponent) for what would be a fifth straight year since he was never injured in the annual game against them. The whole purpose of the medical hardship is to make up for games missed due to injury.

I don't know why you are pushing back so hard on this. It obviously isn't something that would happen for sure, but just b/c you never heard of it or think the NCAA ruling was absurd doesn't mean it didn't happen or couldn't happen to Wynn. I don't know the exact circumstances behind this guy or the # of games he missed except that the year he was injured he didn't miss the CU game. As with most medical redshirts, the NCAA approves or denies redshirt applications on a case-by-case basis, but uses preceding examples to make decisions.

I personally couldn't care less whether he plays against BYU in 2013. He has never been the reason behind a Ute's victory over us, and he probably wouldn't be much better in 2013 either. Even Ute fans are kind of hoping he disappears after this season, I'm guessing.
