i agree with you generally, but IMO the primary reason for the Utes' win streak has been the D-Line. And at a distant second, secondary play. I actually think most of the other positions have been fairly close in terms of the first team players (Utes' depth has been generally better over that stretch but starters have been far closer and the way Whit grinds clock I feel like that the depth advantage was mitigated somewhat). Utah has generally had a significant leg up in the trenches, and that has been the difference. Heck, take away Star Lotulelei and a couple games might have had different stories. The 54-10 game had a lot to do completely owning the middle of our line.
agree with you about this year's game being a toss-up. (my guess is it's a slight down year for the Utes and that they'll be on the uptick in 2018). Yet, until BYU proves they can actually finish the job, I won't get too optimistic.
