question for current BYU students: is church attendance mandatory at BYU?
when I went to BYU in the 80s we had to get an endorsement from the bishop every year so you had to have some kind of relati onship with the bishop but not much. as i recall, you just had to get his signature or have an interview at the end of the school year. I may be wrong but my memory is that it was no big deal. but my understanding now is that they take attendance in BYU sacrament meetings and that if you aren't going you aren't going to get your endorsement. Really? These are college students. Shouldn't they have the ability to choose? Look, I have always supported BYU and the honor code because it is a private institution that subsidizes everyone's tuition and there are 1000s of kids dying to get in who are willing to adhere to the HC. So I get those arguments. But to require that a college kid attend church and to take attendance? I was fortunate to never have a period of inactivity growing up and so far my kids seem to be on track too. But I'm not sure that I want big brother telling them they have to go to church if they want to stay in school. college is an age when they are supossed to figure things out on their own isn't it? and on a side note: i'm not one of these people who claims diversity is the greatest thing ever. and i can live with the fact that the byu student population is mostly white and mostly mormon. but now everyone has to be fully active in terms of church attendance too? almost all of my friends at byu were active at byu but some weren't and they were just as invaluable to me. Do we have a bunch of robots attending BYU now?
