He did.
And there were things he had to do to attend BYU. However, the sequence was different for Van Noy. Kyle had issues but they did not become public/to BYU's attention until after he had verballed to BYU. Then Mendenhall developed his plan for Kyle. I think BYU is aware of the issues wrt New Port and have likely made New Port and his posse aware what he must do to be offered a scholarship. However, from what I can gather New Port's posse is dealing with the situation significantly differently than Kyle Van Noy did. IMHBHAO (in my humble but highly accurate opinion) that is likely to be a far more damaging development to his being offered than the original issues. My reading of Bronco Mendenhall is he is not the type who likes a posse of a player to indicate to the press/social media that BYU missed on their child when the physical ability was never missed. It could easily be interpreted that they are trying to embarrass/bully Mendenhall into offering. I doubt Mendenhall wants that type of influence in his program no matter how talented the kid is. I think this personality characteristic of Mendenhall is open to criticism, but not by me as I think his stubborness is the biggest reason he is successful but his stubborness is certainly a two edged sword.

Now I am not an advocate of BYU's corporate culture and think New Port should be offered by BYU as I think he is basically a good kid who has done some stupid things. I don't believe he would instantly commit and I think he was never planning to go to BYU in the first place, thus why the posse has no issue with the slash and burn techniques they have adopted of trying to embarrass Mendenhall knowing they have nothing to lose because he was never going to go there in the first place. But their technique appears to be effective because people are not smart enough to recognize the game they are playing - well everyone in the world but me and perhaps a few others after I tip them off, of course.
