Calling my shots on how the TV lineup for the 2014 season will look
With some of the games already announced in dates, times, and/or TV channels (announced info is in bold below), I wanted to continue the fun of trying to predict the rest of it. BYU has the potential to field some exciting play that will be a desirable TV draw. BYU won't start taking traditional TV slots earmarked for the Big Ten or SEC, but they should be able to maintain what we have seen the first few years of independence. So without further adieu, here goes:

At Texas

7 PM EDT
ESPN2
There is a real fear that this is going to be on The Longhorn Network as Texas' out of conference foes at home include North Texas, BYU, and UCLA. Last year it had three home games on TLN in New Mexico State, Ol' Miss, and Kansas. This year, North Texas is a shoe-in for TLN as is probably the Iowa State game in conference. The question will be whether BYU or UCLA get TLN treatment like Ol' Miss did last year. BYU and Texas have provided good football on ESPN2 in the 7 PM Eastern slot in 2011 and last year (delayed start due to weather). With the story of Taysom Hill returning against Texas, I think there will be some legitimate intrigue to get the game on ESPN2 in primetime again.

Vs Houston

8 PM EDT
ESPN
With the CBS NFL Thursday Night Showcase, the fourth weeknight college football spotlight is changing for the first time since the ACC, Big 12, and SEC started to demand Thursday night primetime on ESPN for themselves in the early 2000s. Now that TV's #1 draw in the NFL is moving to broadcast TV (NFL Network games were never a real threat), non-invested (not a particular fan of either team) football viewers could be moving from ESPN College Football to CBS NFL Football in droves on Thursday nights. We might begin seeing as many Thursday night games as we have Friday night games recently given this new landscape. So ESPN Primetime on the east coast.

This game could also move to a later time slot to accomodate a double header of college football (see UCF below).

Vs Virginia

9:15 PM EDT
ESPN2
Contract calls for at least three home games broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC. An afternoon, split national on ABC ala the 2012 Oregon State game is possible here, but BYU has shown a willingness for filling the late ESPN2 or ESPNU slot. Given contract demands and BYU's willingness to fill later airtime for the Worldwide Leader, I'm pretty confident we end up close to this.

Vs Utah State

8 PM EDT
ESPN
I hope and wish that the annual game against Utah State will move to a November slot moving forward as early October is still prime real estate for bigger opponents willing to go out of conference on the road if a showcase TV slot is guaranteed. ESPN's 8 PM EDT slot on the first Friday of October (last Friday in September in the years of a Sunday on October 1st) would lure some better names to Provo when we know Utah State is willing to play us year in and year out. That said, here is our second of three Friday night showcases. This one is guaranteed ESPN or ESPN2 and I'll go with ESPN as the Taysom and Crew show proves to be good TV.

Thursday, Oct 9, 2014
At UCF

6 PM EDT
ESPN
Can you say Thursday Night Double Header on ESPN? The Worldwide Leader can get this game at 6 PM Eastern followed by a Pac 12 tilt at 9:30 Eastern (6:30 local). Pac 12 might not like all those later starts, but they need to remember where they are. The sun is still up where they are when it's 9:30 PM in NYC. ESPN gets to showcase the surprise team from 2012 who has a lot coming back against a BYU team that could be making noise nationally.

Vs Nevada

9:30 PM EDT
ESPNU
Welcome ESPNU to your first late autumn visit to Provo, UT of 2014. This is now an annual thing for you and us because when it's the University of Nevada-Reno in town, we're the best late time slot option for each other. This year, it's not just one Nevada opponent we'll need to talk to you about, so stay tuned.

Friday, Oct 24, 2014
At Boise State
9 PM EDT

ESPN2
Given that we know it will be ESPN or ESPN2 with the press release of a week or so ago, it makes more sense for this to end up on ESPN2. 9 PM EDT could possibly be combined for a double header on ESPN, but trims the window for the first game awfully close. Chances are that ESPN has other commitments and BSU/BYU moves to the deuce as its only college football broadcast that night. If there is an 8 PM EDT ESPN broadcast also running, the 9 PM EDT start will provide an offset to allow for channel switching for non-invested viewers.

Saturday, Nov 1, 2014
At MTSU

7:30 PM EDT
Fox Sports 1
Given that the broadcast partners of Conference USA already moved the four games they want on weeknights (http://www.conferenceusa.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/040114aac.html), I think it is safe to say this will stay on Saturday, Nov 1st. It will be Fox Sports 1 or the CBS Sports Network. Interestingly, MTSU did not appear on CBSSN once last year. They only had home games televised on Fox Sports 1, FSN, Fox College Sports, and Comcast Sports Net-Houston. Fox Sports 1's favorite time slot for its CUSA broadcasts last year was 7:30 PM Eastern. So I'll go with that.

Vs UNLV

10:15 PM EST
ESPNU
See Nevada on October 18, 2014 for the reasoning here.

Saturday, Nov 22, 2014
Vs Savannah State

3 PM EST
BYUtv
Almost a lock to bold this one out, but it hasn't been officially announced yet. Stay tuned. It will.

Saturday, Nov 29, 2014
At UC Berkeley

7 PM EST
Pac 12 Network
How bad will Cal be again? The Pac 12 finally started to realize that BYU can help them with their late season smooch fest with Notre Dame. BYU can see that there isn't a team forced to take a bye the last week of the regular season, but only if the game is at a Pac 12 stadium allowing the Pac 12's TV partners to televise the game. Read: we want Pac 12 Network content that is fresh and will drive viewership so we can strong arm more cable and satellite systems into accepting our demands. You're welcome, Pac 12. You're welcome.

There you go. Called my shot. Tell me where you think we'll be on TV in '14.
