I agree that in the past winning the MWC title didn't offer many rewards.

However, the rules have changed. This is something people continue to ignore. Being the best of the non-p5 gets you an autobid to New Year's Day bowl games that are second only to the playoff. I imagine that a team making frequent appearances in those bowl games is going to garner quite a bit of respect.
