It's very easy to confuse grit and moxie with bad judgment.
Quarterbacks with limited skills can be quite effective. Nelson could have been a decent quarterback had he conservatively managed the passing game and used his feet intelligently. The fact that he would throw himself at linebackers and throw balls he had no business throwing was bad judgment. Pure and simple. He never learned to play QB and may have been unteachable in that regard.
