Vegas determines how good a team should be in any given game. They are much more
objective than any coach in assessing the ability and expected performance of that team against a given opponent. And it should be that way. A couch should be hugely biased in favor of his team and set high goals; Vegas OTOH can't afford to be wrong. And over the course of a season they aren't. That is why using ATS results gives an objective and accurate view whether BYU consistently performs at, above, or below objective expectations...not the coach's expectations (although in Bronco's case, he repeatedly has fallen below his stated goals of competing for NCs and BCS games, so even his subjective goals would suggest his misleading winning percentage is far below the perception/expectations he set). FWIW, BYU was 5-7-1 last year ATS. Conversely, Auburn and FSU were 11-2 ATS. No surprise there; the best teams consistently outperform the spread. BYU under Bronco hasn't.

You are mistaken if you think Bronco's winning % against middling competition is impressive to anyone who sees those wins for what they are - mostly wins over inferior competition. I have nothing against Bronco personally; I have stated repeatedly that I think he's a good person and I think he did great things with the football program he took over. But he has plateaued (or slightly declined some may fairly argue) in the past 5 years or so. To think otherwise and cite victories over the MTSUs and USUs (sometimes) and Nevadas and P5 bottom feeders (well, except UVa) is irrational.
