You point out the main distinction that polarizes the gun debate
1/2 the country (not by territory or number, but by opinion) sees guns as a tool, much like a chainsaw, because they use guns in a practical way for a practical purpose. The other half of the country has no use for guns as a tool, and therefore only see guns as tools to kill.

Those who use guns as 'tools,' if they're smart, educate children about the proper use of the gun as a tool, the same way that a parent teaching their child to garden teaches the child not to swing a hoe or other garden tool, or the parent teaching a child to drive teaches the child to drive safely. To this segment of the population, locking up a gun would be similar to locking up car keys or kitchen knives because you are afraid that your child will hurt themselves using those tools improperly.

For the segment of the population that doesn't have a utility use for guns (other than the pleasure of shooting targets, or the security that comes from being "able" to "defend" themselves), guns are something to be feared. Because there is no utility to having a gun (other than the above stated reasons), there is no benefit to not having guns locked up.

Just diff'rnt strokes... different life views.
