Game Report From 2nd Row, Right Behind BYU Bench
Had two sets of great tickets, thanks to a big BSU booster. Mine were on 2nd row within an earshot of some of the players and coaches. Here's a few things I noticed:

--BYU was utterly flat to start the game. No emotion. No one fired up on the sideline. Nothing from coaches. Just nothing. One of our crew pointed this out and mentioned that we may be in trouble....

--I won a dollar from one of our party by correctly predicting we'd open with 3 and out. Again, we were so strangely flat, it was weird (even weirder that a #1 in his class grad of a reputed BYU program would take that bet. He later won on double or nothing, so no cash changed hands). Boise, OTOH, came out fired up and ready.

--Boise completely out hit us throughout pretty much the entire game, but particularly in the early going, and visibly on special teams. It was a portrait of one team wanting it much more and physically taking it to a listless opponent

--Before we knew it, it was 20-0. At that point, JSwaggDaddy got in the offense's face and got them fired up before finally taking the field himself. Anae and 2J (who appeared to be pretty engaged with his players throughout) amped things up to an extent as well. BYU went down the field and finally scored. First signs of life from anyone on our sideline, really.

...Except for Coach Atuiaia. He was the one person who appeared into the game throughout. Constantly with his players, in their faces instructing and shouting encouragement. For simply acting like he gave a yewt from the get go, he earns his salary, particularly compared to his peers. Didn't see any of our D staff act similarly at any time.

--Leslie is clearly disgruntled. Slammed his helmet in frustration after we'd gone 6 and out in first two possessions. Usually sat off by himself. Could often be seen on and off the field shaking his head.

--Holladay has been an internet favorite (I'm among his fans), and I'm not sure what his in-game roles may be. That said, he was rarely around his players on the sideline. Leslie looked like he was getting into it with Stewart at one point, and Holladay broke it up--the most present I saw him act.

--Stewart is what he is, and that's an unremarkable D-1 QB. He clearly is not the leader of the offense or anything resembling it. If there's a leader in the bunch besides Jamaal, and it was really hard to tell at times. They look (and often play) like a rudderless ship.

--Juergens #23 is too small to be returning kickoffs. Juergens #87 fumbles too much to be trusted with punts.

--Pearson should have received Henderson's scholly, hands down. If you've noticed, Colby comes to play, and given our meager pass production, he's having an alright season. Has Henderson done anything?

--Fua can't get off blocks. At all.

--Pikula is an awful open field tackler, as are many. Pikula just whiffs an inordinate amount, even compared to his whiffing counterparts. Part of this is our entire D takes horrific angles. Leavitt was one such offender, but it's unfair to single out just one player.

--It was really hard to notice Bronco. He was right on the sideline throughout--I never saw him with any particular position group at any time. Perhaps not his role, but where 2J and Atuaia constantly rally their troops around them on the sideline, you don't see this much from the others.

--Again, Stewart isn't the leader of the O. He looked a bit shell shocked, IMO. Anae occasionally takes him aside, presumably to talk QB stuff.

--BSU Bronco O miles ahead of the Bronco Mendenhall D. Everything they wanted to do was open consistently. Played us like a flute; BSU players ran open all night. We made them look like world beaters, which they certainly are not. Hedrich is an average QB himself, but he was 16 of 19 at one point. Tough to match his #'s playing against air in pregame walk through, etc.

--Was Howell in the booth? Didn't notice him at any point.

--Overall, BSU very obviously quicker, more physical all over the field. There are holes in their D, and their QB doesn't' throw an amazing ball or have star power WRs, but it was very evident which team was better and which was more ready.

Take it FWIW, as I'm not expert on the subject and am severely disgruntled besides. That said, what I saw gave every appearance of a coaching staff that's lost its team. BYU looks leaderless, listless, rudderless, frustrated, disgruntled, and above all, not that darn good in any aspect of the game. Bless Atuaia and very few others for at least giving the impression that they care.
