for a different approach to fandom, so I can be less bothered by losses, I don't know how to approach the game as a fan. What's worked pretty well for me the past couple years is predicting and talking myself into a loss before the game. I've become quite a pessimist before the game, and then I feel justified when BYU loses. You're suggesting (or proposing as an option) a moral victory approach. USU fans seem to be experts in this. But it just isn't very fun to walk into LES or the Marriott Center for a big game with either approach (predicting a loss or looking for a moral victory (e.g., player development, some good plays, a close score, etc.)).
What about the famous "You play to win the game," quote by Herm Edwards? How can you not be looking at the win as the sole purpose of the players and the fans? While the results-based approach can bring about a lot of disappointment, my approach and your approach may limit disappointment but it just isn't very fun.
Anyway, great post. It was an interesting read.
