kids about them with hands on experience at an early age. But please don't presume to group think for the rest of us . . . I can think of reasons why a kid should have a rifle. He/she builds confidence and skill with a .22 before graduating to larger calibers to, perhaps, go hunting (gasp!) or recreational shooting or engage in self-defense. Teach your kids what you want, but afford others the respect to do it differently.
