That's an interesting scenario, and makes a tiny bit more sense to me.

It seems more like one person wants the divorce, and is offering some continuation of the physical relationship as a sort of "favor" to the soon-to-be ex.

Where the divorce is mutually desired, I have a hard time understanding how the two would want to be together.
