A player lifts his pivot foot, but doesn't put it down again. Is he then free to move as much as he wants on one foot? Could he conceivable hop around on his non-pivot foot after picking up his dribble?

I have always seen it called as once the pivot foot is picked up it is a travel--I admit I don't study the rule book, it just seems that's how I've always heard it and seen it called.
