for 10th place with Mississippi State University. Actually BYU will pay all athletes equally according to the SLTrib, whereas that may not be the case at many other Universities. BYU at $4,500 / year will begin this new era as the HIGHEST stipend paying University west of the Rio Grande. Higher than all but two Big-12 and every PAC-12 institution.
I was wrong in that I originally predicted BYU would offer around $2,200-2,500 per athlete. I am glad I was wrong. At almost a $1k higher than most PAC-12 programs, BYU's package is going to be fairly impressive, especially to exceptional LDS Athletes that may be considering other places because they seek an NFL, NBA or MLB career. Utah as a state on the whole seems pretty free with taxpayer funds as well. UTAH will be the highest stipend PAC program and USU is going to offer a similar stipend of around $3,500. Given the fact that UTAH taxpayers contribute almost $24 million between both university athletic departments every year it is both highly disturbing and refreshing.
Disturbing for the Taxpayer,
Refreshing for the BYU folk that for once in a long time can say to both other programs.... "nah nah nah nah nah nah!"
