All very valid. Everybody has their non-monetary reasons I guess.
And for the most part the lower pay, sketchy VA benefits and the highly dangerous and transient lifestyle don't seem to deter them. I'm sure that their are many who have similar intangible reasons for being librarians or social workers, or building inspectors or postal workers. Compensating them is a challenge. Many would probably do these job for almost nothing. The free market would certainly act on that fact too.
