Heat the oven to 500 degrees with a pan inside. Coat a thick ribeye (around an inch and a half) with canola / vegetable oil, good salt, and pepper.
Put the pan on the stove as high as it will go. Sear each side for 30 seconds, including the edges.
Put steak in oven, about 2.5 minutes per side. Let rest. Should be right about medium rare.
