I took "compete for a national championship" to mean roughly that you're a top
10 team. With the right breaks, most teams in the top 10 with a few weeks to go in the season could legitimately expect to have a shot to win the national championship. This is especially true now that most conferences have a championship game with the winners feeding into a playoff.

I don't think it's unreasonable for the teams that are pulling in top 5 or top 10 recruiting classes every year to expect that it's likely that they'll be a top 10 team year in and year out.
