I have a very close friend who has spent over $1 million
Bagging trophies all over the world. He has giraffes, lions, elephants (huge mount!), almost every bred of bear, etc etc. I don't understand the fascination that he has but I don't enjoy camping or killing things. At the same time, I don't question it.

I served in a bishopric with him and I have seen a small glimpse of how he helps others with his wealth. The "he could do so much good with that 50k" statement is, while true, inappropriate. We could all do so much good with all the vacation budgets and BYU athletics expenditures we have had over the years. We each have our own finite set of finite resources and agency to apply them any way we decide.

A sports fan suggesting that the million dollars (or50k) spent on hunting is inappropriate is really no different than the clarinet player suggesting the tens of thousands we spend on BYU sports is inappropriate.
