Many avid hunters will shoot deer with a bow and arrow and wound them and never kill them. A bow doesn't have the same type of knockdown power that a rifle has, and therefore many times animals will get wounded. They still move very quickly while wounded. If hunters are wounding mule deer, imagine a large lion. It would be difficult to knock it down.
