After a game is over, the video staff chops up all of the clips from each play of the game and each position coach reviews those plays and grades out the performances.
This is common practice among college football coaches.
I'm not here to slam Nate Carter. He gets the call from the coaches to go in the game so that's what he does. And I actually like that our coaches don't use a single game as a measuring stick against one player (contrast with Saban benching his QB after a single pick).
But we're now 5 games into the season. Carter has rushed 24 times for 36 yards. That's 1.5 yards per carry. That has to be towards the lowest in the country for an RB with at least 24 carries. With this info, there is no way he has graded out well by the coaches.
We have a large enough sample size for the coaches to give his touches to someone else. It's not like he is the only option we have. If that was the case then I wouldn't be complaining. But with several other productive options ahead of Carter, I'm struggling to understand what the coaches are seeing that I'm not. I fully admit they know a million times more than me. So what am I missing?
