It's college football.
It happens. Look at Ferentz, Pinkel, Patterson... It took a long time for them to have success.
LaVell didn't "break through" until his 12th season...and he had some help (i.e., circumstances lined up pretty well for him). However, this being said, LaVell was a legend and he deserves all of the praise that we give him.
