Another option is get a scheduling/bowl affiliation with EXPANDED AAC
Encourage the AAC to expand west by taking Air Force (natural Navy rival and perfect fit for the "American"), San Diego St., Boise St., and one other western team (CSU, UNLV, Fresno, UNM?). Then, get a five game scheduling agreement with the AAC, that includes the annual Boise St. rivalry game, and four games rotating through the others, perhaps with a slight lean towards the western teams.

Also, move BYU's Olympic sports to the new AAC. Air Force, Boise, SDSU, and the other western member would fill out about half of BYU's conference schedule in all Olympic sports. Half of the remaining conference schedule would be home games in Provo. That means that BYU would only have to play about 25% of its conference schedules on the road outside of the west - with plenty of games in (relatively nearby) Texas and Oklahoma. Probably only one East Coast road trip for Olympic sports each season.

In the end, BYU and the expanded AAC would land the Las Vegas, Armed Forces, Liberty, Poinsettia, and Hawaii bowls - mostly against P5 opponents.

BYU gets help to fill out its independent October and November football schedules and gets some better bowl options with more variety. But, BYU gets to keep the P5 opponents and Utah St. series.

Meanwhile, the members of the expanded AAC increase the profile of their conference affiliation (and likely a bump in media contract payout for the 2019-20 season) and a virtual lock at the Group of Five's annual NY6 bowl bid. They also get high-profile games with BYU - most likely to be broadcast on ESPN/ABC - and an increased bowl lineup - with new bowl games against P5 opponents. Win-win-win.
