My Take On The Problem
Unlike some other conferences the WCC does not get a steady pipeline of elite athletes for their basketball teams. What they did get is good basketball players who are normally good shooters. They don't rely on athletic ability to take over a game and buy into the coaching at the schools. These coaches have adapted to their talent and have created half court offenses designed to get open shots. If you watch games you will see our opponents getting open shots underneath over and over. From the outside they get open looks as well. That is what a half court offense is designed to accomplish. Think Roger Reid and how many journeymen big guys he turned into effective post players. Gary Trost and Jim Usevitch were prime examples.

The WCC coaches have figured out the way to play BYU is to slow the pace and aggressively guard the arc. We are a guard oriented team and do not have an effective half court offense. Our guards are not well trained in how to make entry passes and our big men don't seem to know how to "show" in the paint where when they get the ball they don't have to make a move, just turn and score. Yesterday I watched multiple passes thrown away because we were in a hurry trying to speed up the game or our guards taking quick threes for the same reason.

I have suggested that Rose bring in someone as a summer consultant to help devise some set plays. I love Dave Rose and I am not advocating he be replaced. I would consider some assistant changes. We brought in Quincy Lewis this year but I would love to here a reason why Terry Nashiff is sitting on the bench. He had no other coaching experience prior to joining the staff. I would want someone that could help organize the offense. I see him drawing up plays during time outs but they are not effective. I think we could do this because BYU is very effective on out of bounds plays in getting someone open.
