to derail BYU's invitation, right? Sunday play almost certainly is an issue for at least some in the Big12, although hopefully one that can be worked around.

Almost none. The Sunday scheduling issues are almost all for olympic sports

The WBB tournament takes place on a Sunday. That's pretty substantial.

BYU was the big fish in the little pond in the WAC and MWC. WCC was hppy to oblige to get BYU in the conference.
