As has been pointed out, the church ball reference is due to lots of outside chucking, very limited offensive sets, and next-to-no fundamental defense being played.
You can find inner street-ball games where people play defense as if their lives depend on it. And it's often more physical than what would be allowed in an actual game. I wish our guards took it as personally when someone is scoring on them as many people do on outdoor courts all over the country.
AAU Ball is often criticized for lack of offensive structure, etc. but again, BYU at its worst looks a lot more like church ball to me.
Unfortunately, the shoe too often fits.
