So what? You guys put so much stock in "who's coming to dinner"...
What matters is who stays for dessert.

1. Not every talented kid LDS, Poly, Non-Poly is going to come to BYU. BYU is academically hard. It has an HC like a very few other schools that is for many young people hard. Even though as Tom Hanks said to Gena Davis in 'A League of Their Own' "It the hard that makes it (baseball) great" not every recruit is up for that.

2. BYU looks for a very specific type of kid. People continually criticized Bronco for not chasing after a very talented young linebacker from Spanish Fork that has started almost every game he's played in at USC. But have you seen him, watched him? My impression is that person expected to not only play MLB but to have the entire world revolve around his Thor-like character. He seemes to be all about himself. He had the grades (USC), the talent (4*s) and the type of leadership skills you want from a team leader...but he was not from what I have seen OTF a conforming team first guy. Just my opinion. Bronco passed because in his judgement, the young man wasn't a BYU type of player. His parents may have also been a little scarry in that whose the next Brett Applegate sort of way. You don't recruit drama living 6 miles from the stadium.

3. Lets worry about how the staff coaches up recruits. Coaching is both mental and technical. A team is both a social construction and a group of individuals. You want to know what makes a great coach that wins? Its coaching!

I BELIEVE ~ Alabama has lots of talent, but as Mark Packer said yesterday, so does Georgia, Florida, LSU, Ohio State, Clemson. Alabama wins because Nick Saban's players are consistently well prepared for every game, mentally prepared and expect to win because of the staff preparing them with hard work, not talent.

Other programs have talent. Alabama molds and shapes talent into a cohesive team on the field of play every time. Urban Meyer does the same (recent loss to Clemson excepted). It isn't JUST a head coach. The STAFF is critical to success. But you need that guy at the top, that LaVell, JoPa, Bowden, Meyer, Saban, Bryant, etc... to mold both a staff, annually changing player personnel, and system adaptability to be successful while engineering victories over widly different opponents. The player needs BYU, not the other way around.
