you should always do it. I don't doubt it is useful but the question really is, is the time better spent on other things. For what it's worth I did not do scouting and I feel fine with how my life has gone, do not regret that at all. But I don't have much interest in camping/outdoorsy things....if you really want him to be into that, it would certainly help. But I doubt an eagle scout is going to be life changing either way.
