in the last 10 years.
I think a lot of the problem is that that Church leadership feels a huge pressure & desire to give BYU to as many strong LDS kids as possible, & so they're really not interested in attracting non-LDS kids other than those that (for WHATEVER reason) are super-qualified & want to be here. And I think their commitment to integrity denies them from making any sorts of exceptions for athletes--& ultimately for coaches who will naturally want the best--& will therefore be constantly pushed outside the confines of the LDS community for the athlete who makes them competitive.
Honestly, if I had more respect for the social ethics that BYU is hades-bent on promoting I'd be more sympathetic. But I don't. And it happens to really bother me the trite types of things that Mormon find SO important to uphold that they can't bear the thought of someone on their precious campus "dishonoring" them by so "indulging"--either on campus or in the privacy of their own homes/apartments.
And I don't even mean that I'm against BYU upholding a strict chastity code. What bothers me is the zero-toleration clause that's attached.
It still rips me no end to think of the bunk Jamaal had to go through to come back to our precious school. And it still rips me that Harvey Unga was given no leeway in finishing out his career here. Hats off to both those men for accepting what was dealt them--& doing the best they could given their circumstances. And ultimately for choosing BYU (Both as BYU graduates--w Jamaal as a return player, & Harvey as a continued presence in our program).
I'm convinced neither of those young men represented anything more than young men going through struggles who slipped up. Big deal. The subsequent actions of both men proved their heart in the matter. Get em back on track & recommitted to the course they need to be in (& I say this of all BYU students that fall on their face w their pressures & struggles)--either that, or let them know they're free to take their education elsewhere if they don't want to live the lifestyle BYU upholds & honors. There's no need to expel over that. None at all.
