of experience who has produced results at each level, developed half a dozen QBs really well, had multiple backups ready to perform in different styles of ball. Everyone has improved under him. He's played and coached under a solid OC and understands it. While SF is a tiny program, it's still noteworthy that he took the dead last offense in the conference and in one year put them #1 in almost all categories. Nobody at any level goes from worst to first just like that. Impressive either way.
I don't know about "THE right" choice, because I don't think there's such thing as one right choice, but he's really not a bad choice. Combine him with some FCS coordinator experience and they'd probably make a solid duo. And you also land a guy who would want to be at BYU and could very well become a HC candidate way down the line. Even if BYU were a stepping stone for him, it would be great for both parties.
The whole "play calling" thing is so overrated on here. Ty was different. The guy had 0 experience in college at all. The game planning and recruiting and running the program from January to December... No experience.
I would love a younger, aspiring guy to come even for a few years. Much more important than play calling experience is the ability to surround him with experience. You give him a cheap get like Peterson with a number of years of OC experience to help out. Experienced coaches for all of the positions.
